In early 1878 the dies to produce this Morgan Silver Dollar were sculptured in many die shops. In the end we were left with two varieties, the full-relief breast and the so-called flat-breasted version. Featured is the rare low-mintage convex breast reverse design. It was minted only in the first three years of this coin’s illustrious history. The left close-up shows the first design. It has a parallel top arrow feather and concave breast. The right shows the second variety. It displays a slanted arrow feather and a convex breast. Each coin is set in its own capsule for protection and comes complete in a display box.
Eight Tail Feather Reverse Set When production of the Morgan Dollar began in 1878, an error in the die created the 8-tail feather reverse design. ONLY 750,000 OF THESE 90% SILVER DOLLARS WERE ISSUED FROM THE PHILADELPHIA MINT! Later in 1878, the die was revised to the approved 7-tail feather design, which appeared on all following issues until production ceased in 1921.
Each set sold includes one of each of the two 1878 tail feather reverse designs in a deluxe display case. Each Morgan Silver Dollar is enclosed in a clear lucite coin capsule for their protection. These sets are available in Brilliant Uncirculated and Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition.
