The Kennedy Half Dollar began minting in 1964, less than a year after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The obverse of this coin was designed by Gilroy Roberts, and features a portrait of Kennedy with the dual-date of “1776-1976.” This was done to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the independence of the United States. The reverse was designed by Seth Huntington, and features Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
