In 2009, the Unites States Mint issued a new quarter approximately every 9 weeks in honor of the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories: the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Island and the Northern Mariana Islands. Each coin has a unique reverse design while the obverse of the coin will continue to bear the familiar image of George Washington.
