Since the early Greek and Roman times, nations have issued special coins to honor their greatest heroes and important events. The U.S. Government began to follow this tradition by minting 90% silver half dollars that artistically portray the people, progress and important events of our great nation!
The George Washington Half Dollar was the first commemorative half dollar issued since 1954. It commemorated the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington and marked the first 90% silver coin minted in the U.S. since 1964. The obverse features George Washington seated on his horse. The reverse depicts Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. The coin was designed by Elizabeth Jones.
