The U.S. Government began to follow this tradition my minting 90% silver half dollars that artistically portray the people, progress and important events of our great nation!
The Washington-Carver commemorative half features two prominent African Americans. George Washington Carver was an agricultural chemist who worked to improve the economy of the south. Booker T. Washington was an educator, lecturer and principal of Tuskegee Institute. The coin was designed by African American Isaac Scott Hathaway who also designed the Booker T. Washington half dollar.
