In 1986, our nation celebrated the 100th anniversary of our greatest symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty. To commemorate this historical and memorable event, Congress authorized the San Francisco Mint and West Point Mint to produce these magnificent proof coins. The $5.00 Gold Piece Proof Coin (with a low mintage of only 404,013) features a close up of Liberty’s face and is also the first of this denomination to be minted in over 50 years. Included are a Silver Proof Dollar and a Proof Copper-Nickel Clad Half Dollar. Each three piece coin set was produced with specially prepared dies and blanks to assure the highest quality, brilliant luster and superb detail.
