The Spanish Milled Dollar, otherwise known as the "pillar dollar" or "piece of eight" has been honored in romantic literature throughout the ages. This coinage which depicts a profile of Ferdinand VII in a soliders dress, was Americas first U.S. Dollar. This time-hornored piece and its fractional parts (one-half, one, two and four reales) were the principal coins of the American colonists. They were also the forerunners of our own silver dollar and its fractional division.
