Sacagawea Dollars

2000-2008

The Sacagawea Dollar (also referred to as the Golden Dollar) began minting in 2000. The obverse of the coin was designed by Glenna Goodacre and features the Shoshone woman Sacagawea, who was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The coin depicts Sacagawea carrying her son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. The reverse was designed by Thomas D. Rogers, which features a soaring bald eagle and 17 stars. Each star represents one of the 17 states that was a part of the Union, at the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Three mints struck these coins, Philadelphia (P), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). The Philadelphia and Denver Mints produced brilliant uncirculated issues, while the San Francisco Mint only produced proof issue coins.

Composition: 88.5% Copper, 6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese, 2% Nickel
